About this course

The increasing awareness of mental health has raised important questions for Muslims, healthcare professionals, counsellors, and students of Islamic knowledge. How does Islamic law approach psychological disorders? How does mental illness affect legal responsibility, acts of worship, consent, and family matters? What guidance does Islam provide on counselling, psychiatric treatments, and contemporary mental healthcare?
The Fiqh of Psychology, Psychiatry, and Counselling provides a comprehensive study of these issues through the lens of classical Islamic jurisprudence. Covering Islamic medical ethics, legal capacity (Ahliyyah), psychological disorders, counselling practices, psychiatric treatments, and contemporary case studies, the programme enables students to uncover over 50 key principles, decode more than 150 Islamic rulings and Fatāwā, and engage with 50+ real-world case studies, equipping them with a principled and practical understanding of this evolving field.
Mental health has become one of the most significant contemporary issues affecting individuals, families, communities, and healthcare systems worldwide. As awareness continues to grow, Muslims increasingly encounter questions that require guidance beyond clinical understanding alone. Issues surrounding legal responsibility, acts of worship, consent, counselling, psychiatric treatment, family relationships, and therapeutic practice all require careful consideration through the principles of Islamic Fiqh.
The Fiqh of Psychology, Psychiatry, and Counselling has been developed to provide a structured and comprehensive study of these contemporary issues through the framework of classical Islamic jurisprudence. Beginning with the foundations of Islamic medical ethics, legal responsibility (Taklīf), and legal capacity (Ahliyyah), the programme establishes the essential principles required to understand how Islamic law approaches mental health and psychological disorders.
Building upon these foundations, students will explore the Islamic rulings relating to a broad range of psychological, psychiatric, and neurodevelopmental conditions, alongside the legal and ethical considerations surrounding counselling practices, psychiatric treatments, and traditional therapeutic approaches. Throughout the programme, students will examine more than 150 Islamic rulings and Fatāwā, study over 50 foundational principles, and analyse 50+ real-world case studies, enabling them to understand how classical Islamic legal principles are applied to contemporary mental health challenges.
Whether you are a student of Islamic knowledge, a mental health practitioner, a counsellor, an imam, or simply seeking a deeper understanding of this important field, this programme provides a principled framework for navigating the intersection of Islamic Fiqh, psychology, psychiatry, and counselling with greater confidence, clarity, and practical insight.
