About this course
Islamic rulings are not derived by simply reading a verse or hadith and applying it in isolation. Behind fiqh lies Uṣūl al-Fiqh — a disciplined framework that guides scholars in understanding revelation, interpreting texts, weighing evidence and applying Islamic guidance to different circumstances.
The Principles of Islamic Jurisprudence course introduces this framework in a structured and accessible way. You will explore how rulings are derived from the Qur’an and Sunnah, why qualified scholars may sometimes reach different conclusions, and how established principles of Islamic legal reasoning continue to guide scholarship today.
Course Overview
Islamic jurisprudence is not simply a collection of legal rulings. Behind every carefully derived ruling lies a sophisticated tradition of textual interpretation, evidence, principles, and juristic reasoning. Uṣūl al-Fiqh provides the framework through which scholars understand revelation and responsibly translate its guidance into legal rulings.
This course offers a structured introduction to this framework. Students begin by exploring the relationship between Sharīʿah, Fiqh, and Uṣūl al-Fiqh, before examining the historical development of the discipline and the major approaches developed by the classical schools of Islamic law.
A central part of the course focuses on the interpretation of legal texts. Students will examine concepts such as ʿĀmm and Khāṣṣ, Muṭlaq and Muqayyad, Manṭūq and Mafhūm, as well as the legal implications of commands, prohibitions, and Naskh. They will then explore the major sources and methods of legal reasoning, including Ijmāʿ, Qiyās, Sharʿ Man Qablanā, Qawl al-Ṣaḥābī, Istiḥsān, Maṣlaḥah Mursalah, ʿUrf, Istiṣḥāb, and Sadd al-Dharāʾiʿ.
The course also addresses questions that remain highly relevant today: How are conflicting evidences reconciled? How are different legal rulings classified? What role do Maqāṣid al-Sharīʿah play in legal reasoning? And what is the relationship between Taqlīd and Ijtihād?
By the end of the course, students should have more than a vocabulary of technical terms. They should develop a clearer appreciation of the methodology, discipline, and intellectual responsibility involved in Islamic legal reasoning.
