About this course
Islamic finance has evolved into one of the world's fastest-growing financial sectors.. The industry now spans more than 140 countries, encompassing Islamic banks, investment firms, Takaful operators, capital markets, fintech companies, and Sharīʿah advisory institutions. As the sector continues to expand in both scale and sophistication, the demand for scholars who can bridge classical Islamic jurisprudence with contemporary financial practice has never been greater.
Despite this remarkable growth, one of the industry's greatest challenges remains the shortage of scholars who combine a deep grounding in classical fiqh al-muʿāmalāt with a practical understanding of modern banking, finance, governance, accounting, regulation, and financial innovation. While Islamic banking accounts for approximately 72% of global Islamic finance assets, the increasing complexity of contemporary financial systems requires scholars who can critically evaluate modern financial products, formulate well-researched Sharīʿah opinions, advise Islamic financial institutions, and contribute to the continued development of Islamic finance.
The Al Balagh al Takhassus fī Fiqh al-Muʿāmalāt wa al-Māliyyah al-Muʿāṣirah (Specialisation in Islamic Economics, Banking and Finance) ( التَّخَصُّصُ فِي فِقْهِ الْمُعَامَلَاتِ الْمَالِيَّةِ الْمُعَاصِرَةِ has been developed to help address this need. Through a structured study of the major classical works of Islamic commercial jurisprudence—including Radd al-Muḥtār, Sharḥ al-Majallah, Bidāyat al-Mujtahid, and Al-Muwāfaqāt—alongside contemporary Sharīʿah standards, Islamic economics, Islamic banking, Sukuk, Takaful, Sharīʿah governance, and applied case studies, the programme equips students to analyse and resolve modern financial issues through authentic Islamic legal principles.
Throughout this Specialisation in Islamic Economics, Banking and Finance programme, students progress from mastering the classical foundations of fiqh al-muʿāmalāt to applying juristic principles through fatwā writing, academic research, critical analysis, and the evaluation of contemporary financial products and institutions. Supported by professional skills development, guest lectures, and a capstone fatwā and research project, graduates are prepared to contribute confidently to Sharīʿah advisory, Islamic financial institutions, research, education, and the continued advancement of contemporary fiqh al-muʿāmalāt.
Overview
The Al Balagh Takhassus fī Fiqh al-Muʿāmalāt wa al-Māliyyah al-Muʿāṣirah التَّخَصُّصُ فِي فِقْهِ الْمُعَامَلَاتِ وَالْمَالِيَّةِ الْمُعَاصِرَةِ (Specialisation in Islamic Economics, Banking and Finance) is a comprehensive postgraduate-level specialization that provides an in-depth study of classical Islamic commercial jurisprudence and its application to contemporary banking, finance, and commercial transactions.
The programme is built upon the conviction that sound Sharīʿah guidance for modern financial systems can only emerge from a deep understanding of the classical legal tradition. Students therefore begin by mastering the principles, objectives, and juristic methodologies of fiqh al-muʿāmalāt through the systematic study of the major classical references, before progressively applying these principles to contemporary Islamic banking, Islamic economics, Sukuk, Takaful, Sharīʿah governance, financial accounting, and modern financial products.
Rather than studying Islamic finance purely from an operational or technical perspective, the programme develops the ability to analyse financial transactions through authentic Islamic legal reasoning. Students learn to examine contemporary issues, evaluate differing juristic opinions, assess Sharīʿah compliance, and formulate evidence-based solutions grounded in both the classical scholarly tradition and recognised contemporary Sharīʿah standards.
Alongside academic study, the programme places strong emphasis on practical application through structured fatwā writing, applied research, contemporary case studies, professional skills development, guest lectures, and a Capstone Fatwā & Research Project. This integrated approach enables graduates to combine scholarly depth with practical competence, preparing them to contribute meaningfully to Sharīʿah advisory, research, education, and the continued development of contemporary fiqh al-muʿāmalāt.
